Empowering You To Reclaim Your Wellness
One step at a time
Let’s unpack this a bit more
by dissecting one of
our not-so-good days.
We drag ourselves out of bed in the morning after a very restless night and think, how will I get through this day. Dread and exhaustion hang over us like a dark cloud, and we pray that the day will fly by so we can get back into bed with the hopes of sleeping through the night, which usually isn’t the case. So, this negative loop continues. To add to this, we are not healing properly because the body goes into repair mode when we sleep, so no sleep equals minimal healing. Our day is therefore marked with sadness, isolation, and irritability which intensifies as the sleepless nights continue. So, where’s our brain in this whole process? It’s synched up with our thoughts and feelings and the longer this goes on, it becomes its norm. Sounds crazy, I know. Now, let’s look at a scenario where we outsmart our brains on a not so good day.
Wake up after a sleepless night, and say, “I am not allowing this exhaustion to dictate my day and will not spend the day checking items off a to-do list, rather my focus will be all about self-care.”
So, you decide to start the day off by grabbing your journal and writing down three things you are grateful for. Now, you’ve fed your brain with positive thoughts, and confused the heck out of it because it's not the space it's use to living in. You get out of bed and decide to make your bed, which you are usually too tired to do. You make your way to the bathroom and clean up and get dressed, rather than stay in your pajamas half the day. Your thoughts are all about what you can do to help your body heal, and you make yourself a nutritious breakfast packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Yes, your still tired, but that’s not your focus. It’s a bright sunny day, so you grab your sneakers and go out for a walk and take in all that nature has to offer. You come back feeling both calm and invigorated. You fill the rest of your day with things that bring you the greatest joy. For me, that might be moving through the day in a mindful way that includes acupuncture, restorative yoga, meditation, breathwork, listening to calming music, resistance training, stretching & flexibility work, consuming nutritious foods, spending time in nature, staying well hydrated, allowing myself a technology-free two hours before bed, reading, and adding to my gratitude journal. Now, how does that sound? I can tell you that this is what most of my days look like now and it’s a game changer, and my brain and body think so too.
